Situated by the western ledge of the Cathedrals of Tara in north-eastern Chile is the magnificent, wind-eroded "Castillo", at an altitude of 4,500m. Known as Ignimbrites, these stone sentinels standing guard over the high plateau were once clouds of ash and silica. In the background is Chita Lagoon, and further beyond lies the Aguas Calientes (Hot Waters) mountain range, with the peak of Pili Volcano looming on the horizon.

Sharkskin Mountain
ID:4351
Aguas Calientes, north-eastern Chile. I photographed these mountains alone many times over different days, entranced by the shifts in tone and colour and by the strange texture of the volcanic ash that formed what I called Sharkskin mountain. Its black lava is so young that erosion is not yet noticeable. This image was created in the final few seconds before the sun set, casting a long shadow from the smaller hill.

White Air in the Tetons II

Distant Flamingos on Salar de Tara
ID: 6793
Ignimbrites, solidified clouds of ash and silica spewed from immensely powerful volcanic explosions millions of years ago, spring from this high altitude desert-scape. Sculpted by ferocious winds, concealed by photographic stillness, into jagged precipices, these formations are known as the Cathedrals. Beyond the Cathedrals lies a flat expanse of salt plains, and the principle feeding ground for flamingos in Chile. All of the three flamingo species found in Chile, the Andean, Chilean and James, are visible in the distance, congregating on the Salar de Tara.

Dawn Flamingos of Salar de Tara
ID: 474
After a brutal, sleepless, high altitude night in a stone ‘refugio’, I emerged at dawn to realise that we had endured a huge blizzard, the largest in these desert regions since 1947 I was subsequently told. A gathering of flamingos seemed unperturbed by it all, as they gathered round the thermal waters of Salar de Tara, sieving algae and bacteria through their beaks in this mostly uninhabited land.

The Guardians I
ID: 547
According to legend, the Atacama was the workshop of God, and it is here where according to this myth he created his first of draft of man, the 'Guardians', natural monoliths 30 feet high. God would have estimated that this first draft of the creation of man would have been too high, and that is why he created us in a smaller size. These are rocks of volcanic origin from the Tertiary period, which over millions of years have been moulded by the ferociously strong winds, in addition to the rain and snow in these prehistoric and desolate parts of the planet.

Desolation Valley
ID: 982
I will never forget driving over the brow of a hill, in hideously powerful winds, to be greeted by this view at Pampa Quayaques, just within the Bolivian border and at an altitude of 4,600m. In the near distance is Zapaleri Volcano, with its distinctive crater, shrouded in cloud, marking the exact tripartite milestone where Chile, Bolivia and Argentina meet. More like the landscape of an alien planet, the beguiling appearance of the turquoise lagoon is misleading. It is too salty to sink into. It is too salty to freeze over.

Volcan Zapaleri Storm
ID: 1169
Photographed at 4,600m altitude in a vicious storm following the 2013 blizzards in this desert region, is Zapaleri Volcano, where Chile, Bolivia and Argentina meet. On the right we see the end of the Cathedrals of Tara and the beginning of the Guayaques pampa. The mountain tops here are not peaks but old sea beds, elevated nearly 5km closer to the skies.

Dragon Hill
ID: 1908
The city of Iquique in northern Chile is locked in by ocean and desert and presided over by Dragon Hill, a vast sand dune. The 2014 earthquake that struck Iquique was a force 7.9 on the Richter scale, and had her epicentre only about 60kms out to sea, a few months after this photograph was taken. Originally established as a Bolivian town, Iquique became Chilean during the War of the Pacific in 1879.

Varela Mountain
ID: 4824
I loved the shape of this mountain, which I called ‘Narnia’ mountain, and photographed her on several occasions. Situated on the route from Socaire to Aguas Calientes in north-eastern Chile, she is actually called Varela, after an old family which established an area of llama shepherding at the foot of the mountain. At these altitudes, well over 4km high, the sturdy, ever-yellow ichu grass thrives where other plants would die within an hour.
Atacama, Chile, 2013.
Turquoise Crater
ID: 6111
Ferocious winds, unhindered over the 200kms of white immensity of Bolivia’s Uyuni salt flats, meet their first obstacle at Tunupa Volcano, reaching insane levels of strength as they swirl around this extraordinary, multi-coloured crater. In the last minutes of daylight, completely exhausted by the ascent to 5,321m, I had time for only this one exposure before our night descent. We could not approach the crater rim any closer, for serious concern that we might be swept over the near vertical precipice. A mesmerising vision of pure stone with yellow bands of sulphur, it was agony to turn my eyes away. This volcano exploded maybe only once, leaving us a vivid example of what planet Earth looked like when it was young.
Uyuni, Bolivia, 2013.
Last Light on Agua Calientes
ID: 4359
The sun disappears over the waters of Aguas Calientes, north-eastern Chile. Here we see a Vega, a huge spring. Sweet water emerges, spiky grasses grow. The rest is salt and stone.

Salt Immensity
ID: 5947
A lake of pure Sodium Chloride, 200km across, uninterrupted. Uyuni, Bolivia. Driving across the lake, distancing oneself from the surrounding mountains, the colour reaches a purer and purer white as one approaches the lake's centre. The geometrical patterns will be subdued by dissolution during summer rains. Then in winter they are reborn just as leaves are after the snowmelt.

Central Chile, 2013.
The Colours of Aguas Calientes
ID: 3957
The Aguas Calientes mountain range, north-eastern Chile, transfixed me with its extraordinary colours, and I spent days alone photographing in this region. These colours are caused by the various minerals in varying states of oxidation, such as iron, copper, and sulphur. The intense aquamarine blue of her waters, faithfully represented here, is caused by the pure white volcanic ash that forms the bottom of the lagoon, and the reflection of the blue skies on the waters. Even with a daily temperature range fluctuating over 60°c, +30 in the day to -30 at night, the extreme salinity of the lakes prevents these waters from ever freezing.
Atacama, Chile, 2013.
Beagle Channel Freeze I
ID: 10014
I spent 8 days photographing from the back of a small King Crab fishing boat that ceaselessly drifted through the Beagle Channel and around Cape Horn in the very extreme tip of the American Continent, not far from the Antarctic. Through endlessly varied combinations of blizzards, rains, mist and sea spray in howling gales, countless mountains passed, a granite black and pure snow white land of exquisite desolation and beauty. Most, surely, have never had a human foot on them.
Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, 2013.
Green Seas of Caleta Maria
ID: 11262
I stayed a week in Caleta Maria, a long disused, steam-powered sawmill in Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), in the extreme south of the American Continent. Each morning I woke at 3am to greet the dawn, and the mesmerising light on the ocean, mountains and glaciers. Normally I was met on the beach of twisted, bleached driftwood by about twenty incredibly friendly penguins but for some reason they were elsewhere this morning!

Volcan Licancabur at Last Light
ID: 1486
Licancabur, the magnificent and perfectly formed volcano that overlooks San Pedro de Atacama, northern Chile, with Volcan Jurique's slopes on the right. In Atacaman mythology, mountains are women and volcanos are men. According to oral tradition, millions of years ago, in the Andes mountain range, Licancabur volcano fell in love with a beautiful mountain called Kimal. However, his brother Jurique also loved her. Their passion unleashed a fraternal struggle for the love of the mountain with clear slopes and a pointed peak. Lascar volcano, the father of the two brothers, grew tired of the dispute and decided to punish his least favourite son, Licancabur, by hurling a ball of fire which hit him on the summit, tearing out his eyes so that they turned into salt, forming "the eyes of salt". Not content with this he threw another ball, but missed and cut off the head of his favourite son Jurique. With both sons injured, he decided that it would be best to separate both of them from Kimal. So he banished her to the neighbouring mountain range of Domeyko, where she became the highest mountain of them all at 4,200m. But, with the strength of their love, each winter solstice the shadows of Kimal and Licancabur come together to remind us of this painful love story.
